Reflective surfaces as a whole are a form of geoengineering and the best-known type of reflective surface is known as the “cool roof”.
A cool roof can save a homeowner up to 15% in cooling costs per year and reduce peak cooling demand by 10 to 15% as it reduces the thermal radiation of heat into the atmosphere, the convection of heat into outside air, and the conduction of the heat into the building as a whole.
This lowers the temperatures and mitigates the heat effect which also slows the formation of ground level ozone and smog.
